The Karuppiah Chettiar family belongs to a south Indian mercantile community called the nagarathars or nattukottai chettiars. They are native to 72 villages in and around sivaganagai district and “valayapatti” is one among them. This region is popularly known as the Chettinaadu. Hence their food, sarees and architecture referred to as Chettinaadu food, Chettinaadu sarees and Chettinaadu architecture, respectively.
